The semi contact day was a huge success with Bulldog hq, Castle hill,
Girraween and Balmain there to fight as well as vt1 and combat zone and
northern dragons.
It was good to see the kids and girls have a go as well as some good up
coming fighters.

The below pics were taken at Nick Stone's Fight Promotion in Manly (Sydney) -
The girl is  Joanna MacEachern originally from Canada but now living in Sydney trained by Nick Stone - she just won  the Australian Women's Muay Thai Title with elbows in brutal fashion!
She won the previous fight she had in Jamacia via stoppage (Elbow Cuts) and won the fight before that she has in Cyprus where she claimed  a World Kickboxing Title....she is extremely talented!

Team Australia bring home the bacon in Cyprus.

it was the annual wpka world titles this year held in limmasol a holiday / tourist resort town on the coast of the island of Cyprus, held from may 6th to 12th it’s a knock out style of tournament held over 5 days, with sometimes as many as 40 different countries and over 800 students competing in this huge event,

wpka Australian rep adrin zadah had been in touch with me about forming a team to go, all fighters had to be experienced (hopefully title holders) and ammeter ,
he had been on all the usual forums but settled with my team as I had 3 fighters ready to go and fight that met the requirements , dylan resnekov (wka thai champ) was fighting in the under 60k thai boxing section, jo mcachern (wka state champ) was in the ladies under 55k thai boxing and erik nosa ( nz champ) was in the over 85k kickboxing section, so bulldog gym all the way for team oz.

we weren’t to know what laid in front of us as you only find out when you get there how many fighters there are in your class, with glen “the bustler” bargary
( double world champ) as assistant coach and technical advisor  we all set off to sunny Cyprus, an uneventful flight later were there and all booked in the hotel, registration and weigh in were in the first 2 days and then fights started on day 3 , all held in the melford stadium in limmasol , two rings and two matted sections covering the semi and light contact were all going at once giving all headaches due to the amount of competitors there ,
we had to turn up everyday to see when we were fighting and we was not on for another 2 days when erik nosa was up first with his fight v a fighter from Moldova , erik started well and was well matched and got a draw and had to fight an extension round which saw him lose on points and out of the competition! On that day we looked at the scoring system and it was done with clickers, so it was down to number of kicks and punches landing which counted, this suited the faster, busier fighter of course, we had to wait another 2 days for the thai boxing sections of the games which suited us just fine sitting by the pool ,
the amount of other fighters there was huge with large teams from Russia, aberbjan   , France, Spain, England, iran, Qatar,  and Wales  etc etc all having a good laugh and making new friends , all except Cyprus whos trainer had been gunned down recently in some mafia feud,
Greece had a few there but some political thing was going on as they usually have a huge turn out , but not so this event.

The final day of fights came around slowly and up first was jo mac v the Spanish girl , now she was shorter than jo so grab and knee was the first plan to see how that went which worked perfectly , jo giving her a good lesson in knee work as she didn’t have any idea how to defend as jo slammed knee after knee into her head coming close to a ko! , jo winning easy and then about an hour later was up against the winner of the kickboxing section (who won gold)  another taller Spanish girl, our tactics were work rate this time and again jo worked hard to get a win and a gold medal for Australia!!
Later on in the afternoon dylan was up first fight v magmannov a fighter from aberbyjan who had won the comp 8 years in a row!!!
Hhhmmmm I thought he must be tasty….  Lets see first how his knee defense is thinking he was mainly a kick boxer .. he had dylan on the back foot with a high work rate and caught him with some neat side kicks to the face but later in the round the first time dylan caught his head and whipped up a knee it landed perfectly breaking his nose and leaving dylan two teeth marks in his knee and a well deserved win by ko in the first round!!
Also an hour later he was up against a russian who got through so work rate and knees was the go, this fight went the distance with a fresh Dylan picking apart the Russian for a well earned gold medal !!  all fights were very fast paced and all 3 x 2 mins rounds, we were lucky to get good draws but thems the breaks in a knockout tournament!!  After the medal giving ceremony we all went back to the hotel and

Let the party begin!! As it was my birthday also I couldn’t wish for a better present than team oz winning 2 golds and the champers flowed into the night leaving us with 2 days to recover and home…
which wasn’t easy, Beirut airport was closed due to the fighting there which was getting worse by the day so some heavy phone calling to our travel agent in Australia and an extra day spent in Cyprus
so a nightmare 2 day journey home through jorden (18 hour wait) abu daubi   (16 hour wait) then 14 hours onto sydney and then diverted to Melbourne due to fog and a 7 hour wait on the tarmac at the airport and then back to Sydney! Needless to say I was back home with a few good memories of an excellent trip filled with classic moments, not only winning two gold medals for Australia but one being glen “the breakdancer” bargary at the after party rather drunk and dancing in front of some girls trips over a step and lands on his face but ever so neatly spins about onto his back for a bit of body popping pretending he did it on purpose gets up and saunters off ,
Not to be outdone by this the next day dylan resnekov sitting in the sauna when a large lady walks in, dylan being concerned says to her “ excuse me but isn’t it dangerous to be in a sauna when your pregnant” to the reply of “im not” and storming out ….. nice one dylan.
Got to thank adrin zadah so much for all the help working out the trip and getting sponsers on board mainly zett sports.
Apart from that, a brilliant trip away and Australia making its mark again on the world fight scene, cant wait till next year!
Nick stone.
